Mental activation is not inherently harmful. You need it to learn, respond, create, work, and make decisions. The problem begins when activation rises without a matching recovery phase.

Why your brain may never seem to switch off
The brain does not passively wait for information. Research on prediction and cognition describes the brain as continually using prior experience and current input to anticipate what may happen next.[10] Predictive-processing accounts remain actively debated, but they offer a useful way to understand why uncertain or unexpected information can keep attracting attention.
Human learning research also shows that uncertainty can alter which cues receive attention. If the same phone, screen, noise, demands, and visual reminders remain present, your brain continues receiving many of the same activation cues.

Use scheduled message checks, fewer notifications, single-task blocks, and visible stopping points. Attention works better when it does not have to remain available to everything at once.
Move your body
Physical activity can support mood, cognition, sleep, and lower short-term feelings of anxiety.[4] The goal is not to punish the body or “burn off” thoughts. It is to support regulation through sustainable movement.

Intuition is easier to recognize when the system can distinguish a meaningful signal from background noise. Overactivation makes this harder because everything begins to feel important.
A useful signal is often specific enough to guide attention: something does not fit, a pattern has changed, a boundary has been crossed, or a decision conflicts with your values.
